The Medicaid ‘Spread’ for PBMs

The “spread” is the difference between what health insurance plans pay the pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and what the PBMs pay pharmacies to dispense drugs.

During a one-year period reviewed by the Auditor of State’s office, PBMs were paid $224.8 million through the spread for Medicaid recipients. Hover over the county names below to view a county-by-county analysis of the spread for Medicaid recipients by drug type (brand, generic or specialty).
